Acoustic Treatment for Floors / Ceilings

A common complaint in both single and multiple occupant buildings is the amount of sound energy which is transmitted through the floor / ceiling structure. By combining recognized sound control techniques, excellent acoustic results can be achieved.

The following elements are the installation steps required for isolation between floors and ceilings.

1. Absorption

Absorption material is installed in the spaces between the joists. Generally, 4 to 6 inches thick of standard fiberglass or mineral wool is sufficient.

2. Limp Acoustic Barrier
A 1 lb. per sq. ft. barrier materials is then applied to the underside of the joists. A 100% coverage is essential. All seems in the barrier are to be occur on the joists and caulked or taped once installed. Every effort must be made to make this membrane "air-tight".
